Please contact the Office of Financial Aid &amp; Student Employment concerning application deadlines for these programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Maintaining Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong><em>What is Satisfactory Academic Progress<\/em> (SAP)?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Students receiving financial assistance under the federally supported Title IV Programs must comply with the following set of standards to be eligible for such assistance.\u00a0 Such standards are referred to as Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and are measured on a per-term basis. SAP is an assessment of your cumulative academic record at Western Connecticut State University. account<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">When an SAP Warning is administered, the student will still be eligible to receive financial aid for the immediate\u00a0subsequent term, known as the <em>SAP Warning term<\/em>.\u00a0 If, at the end of the SAP Warning term the student is meeting the previously unmet standard(s), then the SAP Warning status is lifted and the student will maintain financial aid eligibility for the following term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Students who fail to meet the SAP standard during the SAP Warning term will be ineligible for financial aid in the subsequent term or until such time as they again meet the requirements of SAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">It is possible for a student to be placed on multiple consecutive <em>SAP Warning terms<\/em> if the SAP Warnings are issued for failing to meet two different standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em>Example<\/em>: A student does not meet the Pace requirement for fall semester, and is given a <em>Pace Warning<\/em> for Spring semester.\u00a0 At the end of Spring semester, she is meeting the Pace requirement, but is not meeting the GPA requirement. The student will then receive a <em>GPA Warning<\/em> for the following Fall semester, and will still be eligible for financial aid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Students who do not meet the Speed\/Maximum Timeframe standard of SAP will not be granted a Warning term.\u00a0 These students will automatically lose financial aid eligibility, but may file an appeal to have their aid reinstated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Regaining Eligibility<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Apart from successfully appealing, or enrolling in an academic plan, students who are disqualified due to low GPA or low-credit hour completion will regain financial eligibility once they achieve the required GPA or credit completion as long as they have not completed more than 150% of their program requirements.\u00a0 Undergraduate students who are disqualified due to exceeding the 150% of the required units for their program will regain eligibility after they become a\u00a0graduate student once the Bachelor\u2019s degree is posted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>SAP Appeal Process<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Effective Spring 2016: SAP Appeals will be accepted within 30 days of the date of SAP status notification, but no later than April 1, whichever comes first.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If, after one <em>SAP Warning term<\/em>, the student does not meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress criteria, s\/he may submit an appeal for reinstatement of financial aid eligibility.\u00a0 Appeals may be based on death of a relative, injury or illness of the student, or other special circumstances.\u00a0 SAP appeals must be written using the <a href=\"http:\/\/wcsu.edu\/currentstudents\/SAP_Waiver.pdf\">Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal form<\/a>, and submitted with supporting documentation and a written explanation of what <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">has changed<\/span> that will allow the student to complete SAP during the next academic term.\u00a0This form should be submitted to the SAP Appeal Committee, C\/O Enrollment Services, Old Main 206.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If the appeal is approved by the committee, the student\u2019s aid eligibility will be reinstated.\u00a0Should an appeal be denied, financial aid will be cancelled for the next term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>Appeal Outcome and Academic Plan<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If a student appeals successfully, financial aid eligibility will be reinstated for the following term.\u00a0By the end of term, the student must be meeting the previously unmet SAP standard in order for financial aid to continue to be reinstated for future terms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Students who fail to meet the standard will be ineligible for financial aid in the subsequent term or until such time as they again meet the requirements of SAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Some appeal approvals may be based upon a student\u2019s enrollment\/completion of an <em>Academic Plan<\/em> as developed by the SAP Appeal Committee.\u00a0 The Academic Plan will outline specific academic conditions that must be met in order to maintain financial aid eligibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times\">Financial Aid Withdrawal Policy<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong><em>What is a Return of Title IV Funds<\/em> (R2T4)?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Federal regulations require Title IV financial aid funds to be awarded under the assumption that a student will attend the institution for the entire period in which federal assistance was awarded. When a student withdraws from all courses for any reason, including medical withdrawals, s\/he may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that he\/she was originally scheduled to receive. The return of funds is based upon the premise that students earn their financial aid in proportion to the amount of time in which they are enrolled. A prorated schedule is used to determine the amount of federal student aid funds he\/she will have earned at the time of the withdrawal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Thus, a student who withdraws in the second week of classes has earned less of his\/her financial aid than a student who withdraws in the seventh week. Once 60% of the semester is completed, a student is considered to have earned all of his\/her financial aid and will not be required to return any funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong><em>When is a Return of Title IV Funds Required<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If a student\u2019s enrollment status changes for an entire term (i.e., official withdrawals and administrative withdrawals), the school must recalculate the student\u2019s awards to determine the amount of aid s\/he will have earned based on the date of withdrawal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If a student does not begin attendance in all of his\/her classes, the school must recalculate the student\u2019s awards based on the lower enrollment status.\u00a0 For instance, a student registers for a full-time course load (15 credits) but only begins attendance in three classes (nine credits); in this case, the student\u2019s awards must be recalculated based on the lower enrollment status (nine credits).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>Timeline for a Return of Title IV Funds<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The Office of\u00a0Financial\u00a0Aid\u00a0and Student Employment\u00a0must determine the amount of aid that was earned and how much was unearned; the unearned aid is returned to the U.S. Department of Education by WCSU on your behalf.\u00a0 WCSU is required to recalculate Title IV Funds within 30 days from the date of withdrawal.\u00a0 In the event that funds need to be returned, WCSU is required to return funds within 45 days from the date of withdrawal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The amount of unearned aid will be returned to the U.S. Department of Education.\u00a0 Because the institutional refund policy is different\u00a0from the Financial Aid Return of Title IV Funds policy, any return of funds may result in a balance due to WCSU.\u00a0 This is posted as a charge to your WCSU student account and must be repaid immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>Post-Withdrawal Disbursement<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If you did not receive all of the funds that you earned prior to your date of withdrawal, you may be due a post-withdrawal disbursement.\u00a0 If your post-withdrawal disbursement includes loan funds, WCSU must get permission before it can disburse them by collecting a post-withdrawal Disbursement Permission form.\u00a0 You may choose to decline some or all of the loan funds so that you do not incur any additional debt.\u00a0 WCSU may automatically use all or a portion of your post-withdrawal disbursement grant funds for tuition, fees, and room and board charges (as contracted with the school).\u00a0 WCSU needs your permission to use the post-withdrawal grant disbursement for all other school charges.\u00a0 If you do not give permission, you will be offered the funds;\u00a0 however, it may be in your best interest to allow WCSU to keep the funds to reduce your debt at the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong><em>When is a Return of Title IV Funds Not Required<\/em>?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If you withdraw from one or more courses during a semester but remain enrolled in classes, a Return of Title IV Funds is not required.\u00a0 Withdrawing from one or more courses can, however, affect your Satisfactory Academic Progress and, in turn, your financial aid eligibility for future semesters.\u00a0 Please see our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Student Employment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Student employment is an integral part of the university and of university\u00a0life for many students. Student labor benefits the\u00a0institution in almost every academic and administrative department on campus. The student&#8217;s employment\u00a0can be related to\u00a0his\/her program of study and\/or interests and work schedules can be\u00a0arranged around\u00a0the student\u2019s academic schedule.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">WCSU employs approximately 800 students during the academic year. The types of\u00a0positions available are as diverse as the students themselves. A comprehensive list of position announcements can be found on the\u00a0Financial Aid &amp; Student Employment website.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">To be eligible, students must be matriculated in a minimum of 6 credit hours at the university. Students are paid bi-weekly with\u00a0an the hourly rate of pay contingent on the difficulty of position and the experience of the student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">There are two major funding sources for the student labor force at Western Connecticut State University: the Federal Work Study Program and Institutional Payroll.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The Federal Work Study Program is a federally funded program based on demonstrated financial need; work experience is not the qualifying factor. A Federal Work Study award is based on available funding.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The Institutional Payroll is state funded and is available to all students; it\u00a0is not based on a student\u2019s financial need. Students are employed based on the needs of each department, availability of funds, and the student\u2019s experience in specific areas. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">All federal and state funds are subject to federal and state regulations as mandated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Graduate Assistantships<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Several graduate assistantships are available to matriculated graduate students. Application forms can be secured in the Office of the Academic Affairs,\u00a0University Hall, Room\u00a0302.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times\"><strong>Office of Veterans Affairs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The\u00a0Veterans Affairs Coordinator\u00a0assists Veterans, members of the Selected Reserve and military-connected families in transitioning to higher education and\u00a0certifying educational benefits.\u00a0The Office of Veterans Affairs is located on the Midtown campus in Old Main, Room\u00a0206 with office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Any student who would like information about benefits earned through the armed services should report to the Office of Veterans Affairs. Visiting the Office of Veterans Affairs at WCSU should be the first stop for anyone with a military-connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">The Connecticut Department of Higher Education has approved\u00a0educational programs offered at WCSU for the training of veterans. Veterans may take advantage of their benefits under Chapters 30: Montgomery GI Bill, 31: Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, 33: Post 9\/11 GI Bill, 35: Dependents&#8217; Educational Assistance, 1606: Selected Reserve Educational Assistance and 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Additionally, spouses, widows, and children of veterans seeking to use educational benefits should apply to the Office of Veterans Affairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">To explore available benefit programs, please visit www.wcsu.edu\/veterans and\u00a0www.gibill.va.gov\/GI_Bill_Info\/benefits.htm.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>Types of Tuition Waivers Available for Veterans<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">A tuition waiver relieves the benefactors from the responsibility for payment of tuition. The tuition waiver does not apply to other costs and fees, such as: student activity fees, insurance fees, and laboratory fees. There are two main categories of tuition waivers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>* National Guard Tuition Waivers<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Members of the Connecticut National Guard who have received a certificate of eligibility from the adjutant general, have been admitted to the university as full-time students, and have registered for classes can submit the certificate to the Veterans Affairs Coordinator, Old Main, Room\u00a0206, for a waiver of tuition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><em><strong>* Connecticut State Veterans Tuition Waiver<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If you served on active duty during a time of war or conflict and are admitted as an IN-STATE resident, you may be eligible for a Veterans Tuition Waiver.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Public Act 78-175 and Public Act 74-266 authorized the Board of\u00a0Regents of the Connecticut State University System to waive the payment of tuition for veterans or a dependent child* of a person classified as a prisoner of war or missing in action. The board also declares that qualified intersession courses are entitled to a waiver of 50% of the course cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">*Dependent children: Must be a dependent child of a person whom the armed forces declared to be missing in action or to have been a prisoner of war while serving in the armed forces after January 1, 1960.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">To be eligible for this tuition waiver at Western Connecticut State University, a veteran must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">be honorably discharged or released under honorable conditions from active service in the U.S. Armed Forces (U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force\u00a0or Coast Guard).
