The program maintains professional relationships with the broader educational community and is committed to the continuous support and development of cooperative projects and services with area schools. The M.S. in Education program empowers students to attain the highest standards of academic achievement, personal development, and ethical conduct.\u2002<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Goals, Objectives and Learning Outcomes of the MSED in Curriculum Program<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">The goals, objectives and learning outcomes of WCSU&#8217;s MSED in Curriculum program are varied and to the professional development\u00a0of classroom educators and for the improvement of student achievement. The program is designed to prepare K-12 educators to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">A. The program will prepare educators who demonstrate academic competence in their selected option:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">Investigate curriculum theory and associated research as these apply to classroom practices directed toward the improvement of instruction as indicated by the design of curriculum, website, or grant in the capstone project.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">B. Graduates of this program will value and infuse diversity:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">Expand his or her professional knowledge base regarding the education and development of exceptional, gifted, talented, and disabled students in a regular classroom as indicated by the creation of a research proposal that impacts learning for the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">diverse classroom.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">Accurately assess and analyze student learning, reflecting on adjustments needed for both\u00a0instruction and assessment as indicated by the measuring student learning project.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">C. The program will prepare educators who demonstrate a spirit of inquiry, the use of critical thinking skills, and the\u00a0habits of the reflective practitioner;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times,serif;font-size: 10pt\">Demonstrate the ability to be a consumer of information and a producer of educational research through the use of inquiry, critical analysis, and synthesis as indicated by\u00a0the investigation of a selected research project.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Admission Requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Applicants who wish to be admitted to the M.S. programs in teacher education must submit the following materials to the Office of Graduate Admissions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Application for admission to the\u00a0Office of Graduate Admissions\u00a0and a $50 application fee<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">One official transcript mailed (not hand-delivered) to the Office of Graduate Admissions from each college or university previously attended, including all earned grades and degree. (For initial nonmatriculating enrollment, an unofficial transcript indicating a 2.8 undergraduate grade point average (GPA)\u00a0or higher and the baccalaureate degree will suffice.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">If an applicant\u2019s cumulative undergraduate GPA is below 2.8, the applicant must \u00a0present a score rated at the 35th percentile or higher on the Miller Analogies Test, as indicated below:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">2.8 or higher-MAT not required<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">2.57 to 2.79-35th percentile<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">2.47 to 2.56-45th percentile<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">2.37 to 2.46-50th percentile<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Below 2.37-60th percentile<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">A copy of a valid teaching certificate in elementary and\/or secondary education<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Supporting documents, such as letters of reference, required for particular concentrations or options<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Evidence of successful completion of any required prerequisite courses for a particular concentration<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Evidence of an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Graduate students in the M.S. programs must complete the requirements for the degree within the six-year period immediately preceding the awarding of the degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">New-York-State-certified teachers must check with the New York State Education Department to determine if a Western Connecticut State University graduate program meets New York State certification requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Program Entry Interviews and Academic Planning<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">Each candidate must meet with the M.S. graduate coordinator to discuss and plan the academic program. Information about purchasing the license is at this link: www.livetext.com.\u00a0 If you have questions, please contact Dr. Catherine O&#8217;Callaghan, E&amp;EP Chair, ocallaghanc@wcsu.edu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\"><strong>Degree Requirements: Option in Curriculum Leadership (noncertification)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">A student who wishes to obtain an M.S. degree with an option in curriculum leadership must hold an earned bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited institution of higher education (minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8) and a valid teaching certificate. This concentration is for teachers who are interested in exploring curriculum issues. The main objective is to investigate curriculum theory and associated research as these apply to classroom practices directed toward the improvement of instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times;font-size: small\">A minimum of 30 semester hours is required for the M.S. in Education degree. All courses included in the MS in Education degree must be at the graduate level (500 or above).
