Overview<\/span><\/p>\n

In the exciting, technologically advanced, and dynamic age we live in, mathematics has become one of the primary players in developing useful solutions to practical problems, receiving its rightful recognition as one of the foundational components of basic and scientific research, discovery, development, and innovation.<\/p>\n

Employers from businesses and govern\u00adment agencies to schools and foundations understand more and more the benefits of hiring an employee with quantitative competencies able to think abstractly, critically, and problem-solve \u2014 an employee with the skills that mathematics teaches.<\/p>\n

Math Students at WCSU may choose major options in pure or applied mathematics or math education and are challenged to gain mastery in a variety of mathematical areas while fulfilling all requirements of a liberal arts education. The B.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics as well as the B. S. in Secondary Education \u2013 Mathematics weave career applications into the curriculum. \u00a0All programs are flexible and up-to-date.<\/p>\n

Students have the opportunity to pursue their particular mathematical interests by working closely with Western\u2019s dedicated math\u00adematics professors on independent research projects. These may be in such diverse areas as analytical and numerical methods for partial differential equations, combinatorics, actuarial math, axiomatic set theory, cryptology, data science and machine learning, wavelets, topological measure theory, scientific computing, 3-D printing and more.<\/p>\n

For students who plan to continue with graduate studies in mathematics, applied mathematics or a related field, as well as those who look forward to beginning a career upon graduation, studying mathematics at Western will provide the knowledge and skills required to achieve success.<\/p>\n

It is the mission of the mathematics department to contribute to our society\u2019s mathematical competency in a manner consistent with the university\u2019s mission. To accomplish this, the department has defined its goals for the following three constituencies.<\/p>\n

          Learning Outcomes – B.A. in Mathematics<\/span><\/p>\n

          At the completion of their B.A. in Mathematics:<\/p>\n

          1. Students will communicate mathematics in written form, using appropriate mathematical writing conventions.<\/li>\n

              WCSU\u2019s Secondary Education Program in Mathematics is designed to prepare our teacher candidates to:<\/span><\/p>\n

              1. Develop a rich, conceptual understanding of major mathematical concepts, procedures and applications,<\/span><\/li>\n
              2. Demonstrate knowledge of mathematical best practices, including problem solving, reasoning, modeling, making connections, and using mathematical tools strategically,<\/span><\/li>\n

                Learning Outcomes – B.S. In Applied and Computational Mathematics<\/span><\/p>\n

                The BS in Applied and Computational Math program will graduate students who will:<\/p>\n

                1. Demonstrate possession of a resilient mathematical foundation that allows them to reason rigorously in mathematical arguments and that is adaptable to current and future trends. This foundation encompasses the core areas of:
                  \na. Real and numerical analysis
                  \nb. Differential equations
                  \nc. Linear algebra
                  \nd. Probability and statistics<\/li>\n
                2. Connect different areas of mathematics with other disciplines and demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following modern applications:
                  \na. Data Science and Machine Learning
                  \nb. Scientific Computing (coupled with a specific discipline\/application area)
                  \nc. Actuarial Science.<\/li>\n
                3. Demonstrate an ability to synthesize and apply major theoretical and\/or computational techniques and concepts to analyze, construct, and solve realistic models of practical importance and:
                  \na. Recognize the limitations of the theoretical concepts in building solutions to real-world problems
                  \nb. Adapt theoretical ideas to develop efficient numerical solutions to real-world problems
                  \nc. Adapt theoretical ideas to develop efficient algorithms that can be applied to real-world problems.<\/li>\n

The system requires students to successfully complete a minimum of 40 semester hours split across eleven learning areas.\u00a0 Generally, students can satisfy the requirements for a given learning area with any course they choose within that area; some programs of study may require specific Major Designated General Education Courses<\/em><\/strong>; if so, they will be listed with the program requirements.\u00a0 Additionally, the Racial Justice and Global Diversity requirements may be completed with courses which are part of the program requirements.
