Wolfson-Ford<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"inlineheader\">Overview<\/p>\n<p>In order to understand today\u2019s issues and problems \u2014 in the West and throughout the world \u2014 it is important to have a firm grasp on the foundations of our global society, to know the history and culture of America, of Europe and of the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inlineheader\">Mission<\/p>\n<p>In keeping with the mission statement of Western Connecticut State University, the Department of History and Non-Western Cultures contributes to providing a comprehensive liberal arts education that prepares students for the job market, citizenship, and meaningful lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inlineheader\">Goals<\/p>\n<p>Our goals are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To provide an interdisciplinary forum in which students can deal with political, social, cultural, religious, economic, and geographic aspects of history.<\/li>\n<li>To introduce students to non-Western cultures and help them understand global political and cultural relations.<\/li>\n<li>To help students develop their abilities to think critically, discuss, and explain clearly historical issues and problems.<\/li>\n<li>To cultivate writing, research, and analytical skills that will help students lead successful professional and personal lives.<\/li>\n<li>To provide a history\/education curriculum that imparts a broad base of knowledge about historical events, principles, and theories, so that students have the foundational knowledge they need to educate others.<\/li>\n<li>To\u00a0enrich our students\u2019 understanding of their national and community heritage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"title\"><a name=\"degree\"><\/a>Degree Programs in History<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Bachelor of Arts<\/p>\n<p>History<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Bachelor of Science<\/p>\n<p>Secondary Education: History<br \/>\n(Social Studies Endorsement)<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Minor Programs<\/p>\n<p>History<br \/>\nAmerican History<br \/>\nEuropean History<br \/>\nMiddle Eastern Studies<br \/>\nAsian Studies<br \/>\nLatin American Studies<br \/>\nUrban Studies<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\"><a id=\"ba_his\" name=\"ba_his\"><\/a>Bachelor of Arts in History (B.A.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"inlineheader\">Requirements:<\/p>\n<p>Completion of all general education requirements, the courses and credits listed below and additional free electives to total a minimum of 120 semester hours, including foreign language and exercise science.<\/p>\n<p>HIS 100 Introduction to History<br \/>\n<em>Four (4) courses at the 300 or 400 level, which must include<\/em>:<br \/>\na. One (1) course in European History<br \/>\nb. One (1) course in United States History<br \/>\nc. One (1) course in a field outside of European or United States history<br \/>\nd. One (1) elective course<\/p>\n<p>Plus six (6) additional courses in History<br \/>\nHIS 490 Senior Seminar<br \/>\nOne (1) Non-Western Cultures course<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distinction in History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be awarded Distinction in History, a History major must complete all the major requirements, gain admission to HIS 494, Research Seminar, and complete HIS 494 with at least a grade of \u201cB.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0HIS 494 meets the Departmental requirement for History 490.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Restrictions <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a complete list of prerequisites, corequisites and other restrictions for all courses, please consult the Course Description section of this catalog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\"><a name=\"bs_his\"><\/a>Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education \u2013 History (B.S.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"inlineheader\">Requirements:<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"\/catalogs-edit\/undergraduate\/sps\/programs\/ed_epy.asp\">Department of Education and Educational Psychology<\/a> within the <a href=\"\/catalogs-edit\/undergraduate\/sps\/default.asp\">School of Professional Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Learning Outcomes<\/p>\n<p>At the completion of their\u00a0degrees in History, students will be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Demonstrate critical and analytical skills appropriate for\u00a0probing\u00a0complex historical topics.<\/li>\n<li>Seek out diverse historical sources successfully; mine them for information; and cite them in the appropriate format while completing\u00a0research papers.<\/li>\n<li>Present their\u00a0verbal and written evaluations of the past in a nuanced and clear manner.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate effectively with others on historical analysis and in critiquing each other&#8217;s work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Minor in History<\/p>\n<p>Two courses at the 100 level<br \/>\nFour courses at the 200 level<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Minor in American History<\/p>\n<p>HIS 148, HIS 149<br \/>\nFour advanced courses in American history<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Minor in European History<\/p>\n<p>HIS 186, HIS 187<br \/>\nFour advanced courses in European history<\/p>\n<p class=\"subTitle\">Minor in Middle Eastern Studies:<\/p>\n<p>Requirements:<br \/>\nStudents interested in this minor are expected to have completed all course prerequisites. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better to remain enrolled in this minor.<\/p>\n<p>A minor provides an option for the student who wants an academic focus in addition to a major.
