Overview<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Social Sciences<\/span>\u00a0has a special responsibility to prepare students for the ever-changing demands of contemporary\u00a0<\/span>society.\u00a0 The<\/span>\u00a0department provides disciplinary and methodological instruction and practice in the social sciences. To this end, courses are offered in anthropology, economics, geography, political science, sociology and social sciences research methodology. The department awards the B.A. degree in four programs<\/span>:\u00a01)\u00a0anthropology and sociology;\u00a02)\u00a0economics;\u00a03)\u00a0political science; and\u00a04)\u00a0interdisciplinary social sciences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This curricular effort is supported by department computer and archaeology laboratories.<\/span>\u00a0The department\u2019s role in the university-affiliated Jane Goodall Institute generates opportunities for students to become academically involved in the institute\u2019s mission of environmental, conservation and primate studies.\u00a0<\/span>Additionally, the department has cooperative departmental cross-listing of some courses and exchange of faculty instruction with several university departments such as\u00a0communication,\u00a0art,\u00a0education, environmental sciences, finance, history and non-western cultures, management (public administration),\u00a0social work, and the Kathwari Honors Program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The department sponsors a campus chapters\u00a0of\u00a0the Political Science Honor Society,\u00a0<\/span>Pi Sigma Alpha\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and the\u00a0International\u00a0Honor\u00a0Society in the\u00a0Social\u00a0Sciences,\u00a0<\/span>Pi Gamma Mu<\/span><\/i>. Membership\u00a0in these honors societies\u00a0gives recognition to scholastic achievement, thereby enhancing employer and graduate admissions consideration. The campus chapters\u00a0also provide the opportunity for members to contribute their talent for the benefit of the university and general community. \u00a0<\/span>The department also sponsors the\u00a0<\/span>Social Sciences Journal,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>which publishes\u00a0<\/span>original research written by students.<\/span>\u00a0Students are invited to contribute their essays or research papers for review. Two student editors and one faculty choose and edit the best examples of student work for publication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mission<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The four social science programs at WCSU provide students with a holistic understanding and critical appreciation of the cultural, political, social, and economic elements of society. The department curriculum presents a broad-based foundation in the social sciences while offering a rich and diverse range of degree programs and options.<\/p>\n

B.A.: ANTHROPOLOGY\/SOCIOLOGY<\/strong><\/p>\n

The allied fields of anthropology and sociology focus on the study of social relations, transformations, and problems at local, national and global scales. Anthropology\/Sociology majors cultivate critical insights and cross-cultural perspectives that are of growing importance in an interconnected world facing many human-made challenges. With rigorous training in human diversity, social change, and qualitative and quantitative research and analysis, the Anthropology\/Sociology program provides excellent preparation for careers in social service and social justice work, education, public health, government, and business.<\/span><\/p>\n

B.A.: ECONOMICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The economics program provides students with an understanding and appreciation of the economic behavior of individuals, business and society. The focus is on social outcomes of economic transactions and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>activities<\/span><\/span>, as well as on economic performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In addition to economic efficiency, economics studies the issue of equ<\/span>i<\/span>ty, analyzing various social issues from the economic perspective, including inequ<\/span>ali<\/span>ties in economic opportunities and discrimination; it examines efforts to remedy those inequities through means of redistribution of income or wealth and their impact on the overall economy<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Economics is taught as part of a liberal arts education at Western and provides an especially relevant background for careers in business, finance, international organizations or government, as well as for graduate study in economics, law or business.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

B.A.: POLITICAL SCIENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Students of political science are given an opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the political aspects of society. They are provided with a practical background for a variety of legal, government, public and social service careers, and a preparation for graduate studies in political science, as well as in related fields, such as pre-law.<\/p>\n

B.A.: SOCIAL SCIENCES<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the BA in Social Sciences <\/span><\/span>students choose from two options: <\/span><\/span>Global Studies<\/span><\/span>, or <\/span><\/span>Social Justice and Policy<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Each option <\/span>offers a flexible and unique interdisciplinary opportunity where <\/span>s<\/span>tudents <\/span>benefit from the combined expertise of anthropologists, <\/span>economists, <\/span>geographers, <\/span>political scientists, <\/span>and <\/span>sociologists <\/span>in the Department of Social Sciences<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Both options <\/span>ground students in a skill set of scientific research methods.\u00a0 T<\/span>he interdisciplinary approach<\/span> affords students socio-cultural literacy, and a <\/span>global perspective, both of which <\/span>equip students to thrive in diverse communities locally and internationally<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>With the <\/span><\/span>Global Studies<\/span><\/span> option, s<\/span>tudents<\/span> explore both the interconnectedness of our world as well as social issues in nearly every geographic region of the globe including Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Latin American and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the United States.\u00a0 <\/span>With the <\/span><\/span>Social Justice and Policy<\/span><\/span> option, students <\/span>explore and assess topical issues that grapple with inequities and injustices<\/span>, and then learn to <\/span>develop and implement effective policy<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning Outcomes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the completion of their studies, Social Science majors will demonstrate:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Mastery of or proficiency in the theories and concepts of their field in the social sciences.<\/li>\n
  2. Mastery of or proficiency in the research methodologies of the social sciences.<\/li>\n
  3. Mastery of or proficiency in the application of their skills\/ behaviors in the social sciences.<\/li>\n
  4. Mastery of or proficiency in information technology and literacy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Degree Programs in Social Sciences<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Degree and minor programs require a minimum GPA of 2.0. All department majors are required to earn at least a \u201cC\u201d (2.0) minimum grade in any foundation course (100 level or as specified and required in the student\u2019s major program) and in the three required methods courses: SS 201, SS 300 and SS 400. Students should contact the department chair in order to sign up for their required research seminar, SS 400, one semester prior to registration.<\/p>\n

    An electronically submitted portfolio of work in the social sciences is required of all students during the final semester before graduation. Four elements of the portfolio include:<\/p>\n

    1) Two \u201cCourse of Study\u201d statements.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. a) A written discussion of the student\u2019s course of study, including courses contributing to scholarly development, steps taken to meet challenges in that development, and future plans based on the course of study;<\/li>\n
    2. b) A proposal of a significant question or line of inquiry of importance to the student in the major and an account of having arrived at that question or inquiry. Included will be a discussion of several research sources of bearing on the student\u2019s question or inquiry, and a critical response to the inquiry\u2019s assumptions or a proposal for a methodology that answering the question would require.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      2) A research paper (previously submitted in a major course).<\/p>\n

      3) A senior thesis (previously submitted in SS 400: Senior Research Thesis).<\/p>\n

      4) A professional r\u00e9sum\u00e9\u00a0<\/span>and sample cover letter<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our well-being, therefore, depends on the understanding of foreign peoples, their histories and cultures.         <\/a>Minor in Women\u2019s Studies (18 SH)<\/strong><\/span>

        The women\u2019s studies minor is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental program that provide the opportunity for students to increase their awareness and knowledge about women\u2019s achievements and contributions to society, and about social concerns and issues that are of particular importance to women and to all minority groups.<\/p>\n

        The 18 credits in the minor shall consist of electives with a WS label or courses with a discipline label which are identified as relevant by a committee drawn from participating departments. Students should contact their faculty adviser for a list of recommended electives.<\/p>\n
